(octubre 2011)
Martha Tennent is an English-language translator who works primarily from Catalan and Spanish. She was born in the United States, but has lived most of her life abroad. At a young age she resided in various European countries, before finally settling in Barcelona at the age of twenty-two.

She holds a B.A. degree in French and a B.A. in English. In 1990 she received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Barcelona.

For many years Tennent worked as dean and professor at the University of Vic (Barcelona), where she helped train translators and interpreters. Based on her experience during those years she published the edited volume of essays, Training for the New Millennium: Pedagogies for translation and interpreting.

Her translation of Mercè Rodoreda’s novel La mort i la primavera (Death in Spring) was longlisted for the Best Translated Book Award in 2010. She received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for her translation of The Selected Stories of Mercè Rodoreda.

Although she lived for almost a decade between Barcelona and New York City, today she can usually be found on the Costa Brava or in Barcelona... when she is not elsewhere.
